Description
Ben, a spectacle-wearing centipede, is thrilled to start second grade. Until a sneering grasshopper points out that he’s the only one still wearing “baby shoes.” Fifty pairs of new shoes later, Ben realizes that tying shoes isn’t so easy, especially with a low-vision disability that even thick glasses can't completely correct. The school's occupational therapist shows Ben some tips and tricks for shoe tying that include using special colored laces. Now Ben must decide whether using the special laces is worth it—especially when it makes him look different and a bully is involved.
Background
Working as a pediatric occupational therapist, Dr. Karen Dobyns observed that many tools that help children with special needs, such as using color-contrasting laces for shoe-tying, help “neurotypical” children as well. Many children, however, would rather struggle than risk the social exclusion that may result when one looks different or acts differently from others. Karen's doctoral dissertation was on “Increasing Awareness and Acceptance of Children with Disabilities through Children’s Picture Books.” She found that bibliotherapy, or using children’s picture books as a therapeutic tool, can save time and costs. When educating children about disabilities, picture books normalize differences and therefore promote acceptance and social inclusion.

Volume 1: Interactive Lesson Book
Volume 2: Guide's Guide for parents, educators, and therapists
  • Is it possible to help change the actions of children so that they are more polite, thoughtful in their actions, and sensitive to others?
  • Can children be encouraged to think before acting so that they take positive steps when connecting with others?
  • Can children be taught to make decisions that are mutually beneficial for their home, school, and friendship TEAMs?
  • Overall, can children be taught appropriate ways to communicate and interact with others?
With the Growing G.R.E.E.N. InterActions program, the answer to these questions is "yes."

Growing G.R.E.E.N. InterActions is a new social literacy program that guides young people to act as part of a TEAM no matter who they are with.  It explicitly teaches students how to become team members who take actions for the common good in order to meet Common Team Goals.

This engaging team-connecting program has been developed and successfully used in upper elementary and middle school classes.  It provides explicit lessons, scripts, strategies, and practice opportunities for students who struggle with social language disorders and emotional challenges. Participants learn to think first and analyze situations so that they say and do things that other team members consider helpful, prosocial, and G.R.E.E.N. This includes such social situations as basic greetings, being supportive, seeking more information, sharing different points of view, and navigating the process of complex compromise.  They learn to be G.R.E.E.N. for the TEAM with actions that are Grateful, Respectful, Easygoing, Empathetic, and Navigating.

The Guide's Guide is intended for teachers, therapists, and parents who will be Guides for the participants as they journey through the Growing G.R.E.E.N. InterActions Program. This guidebook is meant to help you, the Guide, understand the purpose of the program and how to best use the presented materials. In this way, you and the participants will actually be able to see improvements in social functioning, first in structured activities, and then in real-life situations. Through your guidance, you will help others learn the skills necessary for acting increasingly more G.R.E.E.N.: Grateful, Respectful, Easygoing, Empathetic and Navigating.

Growing G.R.E.E.N InterActions™ has been developed to foster social analysis skills and pro-social behavior in individuals with emotional and pragmatic language challenges.  However, the program's concepts and integrative activities have also been found to be effective with participants from the general population to help them improve their social skills. The target population for this program is upper elementary and middle school students, but some lessons and approaches of the program have been used successfully with primary grade students.  Other lessons and strategies have been useful when shared with high school students and adults who can benefit from development of their pro-social skills.
